If you want your website to be ‘up’ the majority of the time, then this is not the host for you. I experienced about 75% uptime over the 3 months I hosted with them. Customer service is terrible and so are the managers.

Overall: so-so experience –prs and cons…
I’ve been with ixwebhosting for a little over a week now (transfered frm ACTWD).
Here is my detailed review and comments:
1st, let me briefly explain the nature of my site/needs, and the reason I transferred t ixwebhosting.
My site/application involves 2 things:
a) a public web site, which perfrms php/mysql queries on my database, and
b) an updater process that updates the database regularly.
My previous host, ACTWD, is a small company.
although their $ was slightly higher ($99/yr), their server load/speed and reliability was exceptional, and a call to their help desk resulted in speaking directly to the sys admin.
The problem was that I outgrew their features. In particular, I needed to be able to set up cron jobs t be run regularly to update my database, and for security reasons, they did not allow that (unless you wen to a costly VPS or dedicated server service).
THat said, I read all the reviewes and decided to switch to ixwebhosting.
Unfortunately, my experience s far (only been a little over 1 week) has not been great.
Before I unleash my laundry list of issues, let me 1st provide the pros on this company.
I love their cust support in that they are a big enough company such that support is 24hrs/day, and the people are fairly knowledgable and try to be very helpful. I am not used to such support w/a low cost plan…
However, this is only great if you have a general or “user issue” related issue. If you have a deeper ixwebhosting caused issue, you are in for quite a frustrating ride, as only the admins can address it, and their level of support is extremely lackluster.
Here’s my exact list of the issues I’ve encountered in only my 1st week!
(Note: they told me I was on a new server –only 8 weeks old, s this may be a big part f the issues.)
1. Time on paired mysql db server was in GMT, where as time on host server was not anything (e.g. randomly set).
Resolution: quick. Admins went in and changed both to EST
2. Host server got extremely slow. Called support, and while on the ph w/support, went down entirely.
System was brught back up relatively quickly, but suport could not provide me w/an explaination of what the problem was.
More over, when the system was up again, a plethra of new issues started as fllows:
3. My site was unavailable for almost a full day.
Apparently, the permissions on all my files and directories were changed upn the server coming up again.
4. I no longer could access a different dmain that my db update process needs t do an http get from (w/in php).
SOmething abut the routing setup from the host server was not configured correct, and the domain I needed to access was not accessible. (Not I extensively tested access from other severs and it worked).
THis tok them 2 full days to get to and actually fix.
I since have been fighting with them abut twice/day trying t get the explaination of what happened and how they fixed it. no luck.
5. In the prcess of makign the above fix, the admin deleted and replaced my index.html file w/a test one he was apparently using and left it that way. THis caused me another down day because I didn’t realize this until a user called me.
Again, I can not get them t give me an explaination for any of this.
6. At another point, my site became unexplainably unavailable, as if it was off line (I estimate for about 30 mins)
I immediately called support, but this time, it was about a 40 minute hold to reach them 9usually it’s much faster).
By the time I gt through, it was available again. THey were able to furnish no explaination, or even confirmation that there was a prblem. THey said they didn’t see anything in the logs.
I again remind you, this is only after a week of service!
I hope and pray service improves, else I will certainly be looking for a new host asap!
I have been begging ixwebhosting support for explainations, explaining I need to understand if the many issues are a) specific to the server I am on, b) company wide issues, or c) associated w/the budget plan I am on.
I tried explaining to them that I am ammenable t considering a better plan (such as VPS) if we know for sure that it will actually solve the reliability issues.
But so far, I appear to be asking questins and have expectations outside of their circle of support…
Note on availability guarantee:
Everyone should be aware that this is total BS.
THis goes for any of the hosting companies (not just ix).
If you read the fine print, availability is generally based on server up time, and not actual functionality of your site.
If we look at functionality and availability of my site, I’m so far shooting less than 50%!!! Yes actual “technical” server downtime was minimal.
ANotherwords, if the server is up, but yur site is inaccessible, it counts as overall uptime, not down…
P.S. If anyone can recommend an all-around better host, I would appreciate it (in the event my ix issues don’t clear up in the next 2 weeks or so)

sorry for the bad experience while with ixwebhosting. So far i having my 5th hosting account with IX, and with almost 100 websites hosted with them now
*running custom script with extra features on shared hosting plan is the biggest nightmare. Long ago i have a mobile aps script running at backend that can support WAP as well… and it have some scheduling as well. Shared hosting will not be the solution for all these. Shared hosting is simply optimised for web publishing.
**New hosting account are having more downtime. here is why. there are too many new users/owner in the new server.. and they are testing their scripts, and overload the servers. And the admin are being requested to change this and that, thus might cause confusion.
*** for most control, you might really need to consider a vps hosting plan. Running a vps hosting plan require more skill as well, as most vps are self managed.

THanks.
Only, if issues such as incorrect server time, server being down and routing issues between server and other 3rd party dmains are the prblem, wouldn’t that be a server issue, and not a service type issue?
Another words, and correct me if I’m wrong, isn’t VPS a dedicated set of resources on a big shared server?
So if the issues I described are server related, wouldn’t they also be issues on a VPS plan if the VPS is set up on the same server?
Just to clarify, my issues were NOT due to lack of sufficient resources (e.g. speed, cpu, memry, etc. did not appear to be an issue. Only availability and the stuff mentined above.)
If I am missunderstanding, and VPS WOULD solve these sort of issues, than by all means, correct me, and I am very appreciative!
